On Saturday, October 2, during the National Association for Printing Leadership’s annual Soderstrom Society dinner at the Park Hyatt Hotel, Stephen L. Johnson, President, RR Donnelley-State, Columbia, SC, received the 2010 Walter E. Soderstrom Award. During the event, 10 industry leaders were inducted into the Soderstrom Society.
“We were very pleased to present this award to someone who has given so much of his time and energy to advancing our industry and the educational aims of NAPL,” said NAPL president and CEO Joseph P. Truncale, in recognizing Johnson, the Association’s immediate past chairman.
“Steve exemplifies the leadership ideals of the Soderstrom Society throughout his career, in his business activities and his passionate dedication to industry education, and is truly deserving of this significant industry-wide honor.”
Johnson began his career at RR Donnelley & Sons, Mattoon, IL., and went on to serve as Plant Manager at R.L. Bryan Company, Columbia, SC; Vice President of Washburn Graphics, Charlotte, NC; General Manager/Specialty Publications at William Byrd Press, Richmond, VA., before becoming State Printing President. He is a Director of the Graphic Arts Show Company and Chairman of the Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation Board. A graduate of Eastern Illinois University, he holds a Master’s Degree in Printing and Industrial Management from Clemson University and serves as Chairman of the Clemson Graphic Communications Program Advisory Board and a member of the Clemson College of Business and Behavioral Science Senior Advisory Board.
Named for the late Walter E. Soderstrom, a founder of NAPL, the Society is an honors organization that recognizes the contributions of industry leaders.

NAPL also honored long-time staff member Robin Dow Schabacker, who died July 24 after a year-long battle with lymphoma, inducting her into the Soderstrom Society posthumously during a moving ceremony attended by several members of her family.
Schabacker, 49, spent 22 years with NAPL and oversaw NAPL’s Management Plus Program and Management Plus Awards. A graduate of Rider College, she held an M.B.A. degree from Montclair University, and was founder and chairperson of NAPL’s Community Relations Committee, organizing various activities on behalf of area charities and helping NAPL earn the highest award from the Bergen County (NJ) Volunteer Center.
A volunteer at New Jersey’s Chilton Hospital, she was the unanimous first-ever recipient of the Points of Light Award from the NJ Society of Association Executives.
