Print Ambassador Lifetime Achievement Award Presented at Print 09

Rance Crain, president of Crain Communications—a business media company—is the recipient of Kodak’s inaugural Print Ambassador Lifetime Achievement Award. Announced at Print 09, the honor recognizes Crain’s career achievements and commitment to advancing and promoting the power of print.

Crain Communications was founded in 1916 by G.D. Crain, Jr., Rance Crain’s father. It publishes 25 business, consumer and trade journals worldwide, largely in North America and Europe. Crain also produces business journals in Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit and New York City; operates trade shows; and publishes trade content online.

In addition, the company’s Crain News Service provides business news and information to other media outlets.

Rance Crain serves as editor-in-chief for a wide range of respected publications, including Advertising Age, Crain’s Chicago Business, Crain’s New York Business and TelevisionWeek.

He was named senior editor of Advertising Age in 1965, appointed first editor of Business Insurance in 1967 and editorial director of Crain Communications in 1971. Crain added the title of company president in 1973.

Rance Crain is credited with founding four of the company’s titles, including Pensions & Investments, Crain’s Chicago Business, Crain’s New York Business and Electronic Media. Through his leadership and commitment to print as a medium that drives engagement and response, Crain has been instrumental in growing trade media for the advertising and media industries.

“Rance’s commitment and countless contributions to the publishing industry have been extraordinary,” said Chris Payne, director and vice president, Business to Business Marketing, Kodak. “He is the ultimate champion of print, dedicating himself and his career to advancing the power of print in our world.

“His family’s company has served as a premier source of vital news and information to industry leaders and consumers worldwide for more than 90 years. It is because of these accomplishments and his ongoing efforts that we are honored to distinguish him with Kodak’s inaugural Print Ambassador Lifetime Achievement Award.”

“The digital revolution is changing the business of communications on a daily basis,” Crain said. “Through it all, print continues to prove its vital role in a multimedia world. Its enduring power is rooted in its flexibility. Print works extraordinarily well with other media, driving users to digital media, adding depth to broadcast campaigns and personally connecting with customers via direct marketing.

“I’m proud of how Crain Communications is helping shape the new future of print and am honored to receive this award on behalf of the entire Crain team.”

A graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and former sports editor of The Daily Northwestern (1960), Crain is a charter member of Medill’s Hall of Achievement and a recipient of the 1992 Northwestern University Merit Award. The Print Ambassador Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Crain during a special ceremony at Kodak’s booth at Print 09.

The award presentation was streamed live over the Web and, together with other show floor interviews, will be available in the video gallery at www.kodak.com/go/print09.
