Everyone is talking about sustainability. What about your business? According to experts, not only are more print buyers looking for green solutions, but “going green” enables PSPs to “give back” to the environment and community. And it might even help your bottom line.
“‘Going green’ has become a society awareness and initiative,” says Jodi Haugen, Director of Marketing, Xcel Products, Inc. (Booth 3235). “Customer are asking for—and in some cases demanding—more sustainable products. A company that is well educated in sustainability becomes a resource and provides a comfort level for customers. Becoming a resource is a powerful tool to move you ahead of your competition.”
However, M. Jan Martin, Events, Fulfillment & Communications Manager, Domtar (Booth 3135) cautions printers not to “go green” simply because it’s en vogue. “While a growing number of consumers wish to support organizations that operate in a sustainable manner, they can also sense when those ‘green’ initiatives aren’t genuine,” says Martin. “Capturing a larger share of this growing customer base requires commitment over time.”
Another reason many people look for green solutions is also the “feel good” aspect of sustainable programs.
“Certainly for our industry it is important to recognize that the resources we use are not in infinite supply,” says Harry Stinson, President, FloClear LLC (Booth 3035). “With this in mind, it is impossible not to look at your kids and realize that you would like for them and future generations to enjoy the same or better when we are long gone.”
“The print industry produces end-user products that may ultimately end up in a landfill. As an industry, one would hope there is a feeling of responsibility to contribute to a healthier and more sustainable environment,” says Haugen. “My favorite quote on sustainability comes from the United Nations 1987 World Commission on Environment and Development. ‘Sustainability: Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’”
