Heading in Digital Directions

Compared with screen printing, digital production offers time and cost savings for short runs since all the needed colors print simultaneously and the machine can be run by a single operator or even be left to run unattended.

Founded in 1970 by Henry Van Beber, Marking Systems Inc. produces UL/CSA labels, warning/caution labels, nameplates, graphic overlays, membrane switches, bar code labels, and insulators for a wide variety of clients. Today, Henry’s sons Matt and Greg Van Beber own the company, which employs more than 100 people and occupies a large production facility in Garland, TX.

Marking Systems has based its production on multi-color and roll-to-roll screen printing presses. Since 2002, they have augmented their production capabilities with digital printers. Oana Stancioiu runs the digital printing production floor. “Digital printing has really grown up over the past few years,” said Stancioiu. “These printers provide a high quality production alternative for us.”

Anchoring their digital production environment are three Roland printers: a SOLJET printer, a SOLJET printer/cutter, and a Roland VersaUV LEC-series UV inkjet printer/cutter (Booth 3451). “My area is a small factory within a large factory,” said Stancioiu. “Digital printing has grown from zero in 2002 to be approximately 30% of our business today.”

Marking Systems chose the VersaUV because of its ability to print on a wide range of substrates. “Having the ability to print on a variety of materials, including the media we use for screen printing, is a huge advantage,” said Stancioiu.

Today, Marking Systems runs an average of $20,000 in orders each month on the VersaUV. “As we discovered the machine’s capabilities, we switched more and more of our jobs to the VersaUV,” said Stancioiu. “The machine has paid for itself many times over.”

Marking Systems uses the VersaUV for prototyping and smaller production runs, as well as for producing overlays, including nameplates with windows. Compared with screen printing, digital production offers time and cost savings for short runs since all the needed colors print simultaneously and the machine can be run by a single operator or even be left to run unattended.

“Accuracy and speed are critical in this business,” said Stancioiu. “Digital printing provides us with excellent output and a cost-effective means of production that helps us keep our clients satisfied.”
