GRAPH EXPO 2012 attendees, for the first time, were able to plan their MUST SEE ’EMS booth visits in advance of the show. From this year’s show, a total of 108 products were nominated for evaluation by the MUST SEE ’EMS Selection Committee. While all nominated products had interesting characteristics that merited consideration, only a handful achieved “award winner” status.
Entries in the MUST SEE ’EMS competition were submitted by the graphic communications industry’s top vendors and placed for judging in 11 individual categories. Winners were selected by a panel of industry experts, journalists, and consultants who based their choices on the impact they believe these technologies will have on the industry. Winners were picked in each category with the first-time “Best of Category” selections announced at the conclusion of the EXECUTIVE OUTLOOK Conference, prior to the opening of GRAPH EXPO.
Legacy Award Winner
The Prinergy prepress workflow system, developed by Creo and Heidelberg and now a product of Eastman Kodak, was selected to receive the first-ever MUST SEE ’EMS “Legacy Award” recognizing a technology that has had a lasting impact on the entire graphic communications industry. It was selected from among all of the winners since the inaugural MUST SEE ’EMS recognition program in 1999.
“While each of the candidates reviewed by the MUST SEE ’EMS Selection Committee has made a worthwhile contribution to our industry, it was the consensus of the judges to present the 2012 Legacy Award to the Prinergy prepress workflow system,” said GASC President Ralph Nappi.
According to MUST SEE ’EMS program coordinator Hal Hinderliter, “Prinergy was not the first PDF-based workflow, but it stood out as the first product to bring the power of in-RIP PDF editing to a large scale audience. Virtually all prepress workflow systems are based on PDF, a concept that Prinergy helped legitimize.”
One judge commented, “Nothing else on the list went on to become as widely adopted and used as Prinergy. It’s a bedrock technology that continues to evolve as it drives productivity throughout the industry.” Another said, “This is still the most widely integrated and automated product on the market ... it’s a fixture in the industry.” Other comments described it as “robust” and “a complete success.” Clearly, the Selection Committee felt that in consideration with other progressive MUST SEE ’EMS winners since 1999, Prinergy was a standout with a significant long-term impact on the graphic communications industry.
Moving forward, the Legacy Award will be given annually to recognize one past MUST SEE ’EMS winner that has had a lasting influence on the industry.
