manroland Users Group Meeting Reflect Newspapers' Growing Presence at GRAPH EXPO

With the growing amount of newspaper-industry exhibits and information at GRAPH EXPO, this year’s show once again presents an opportunity for manroland web systems newspaper press users to meet at their co-located users group meeting, which is taking place at McCormick Place West, October 7 and 8.

“This year, we have nearly twice the number of registrants to our conference compared with 2011,” says Kristy Gerry, Director of Production for the Omaha World Herald and Vice President of the manroland Users’ Group. “The reason? An opportunity to see the latest print technology at GRAPH EXPO and participate in valuable professional development activities with peers all at once.”

“Our registrations grew because GRAPH EXPO has expanded to provide more of a newspaper focus,” said Gerry. “Newspaper production operations are becoming more like commercial printers, so there is a greater need to learn about the latest developments in commercial printing.”

The conference agenda is a strong draw. For the first time since manrug began hosting its conference at GRAPH EXPO, it includes presentations from members who upgraded their pressrooms with technologies from other manufacturers.

Users group members who installed manroland presses years ago are looking at potential upgrades, according to Gerry. As the users group board put together this year’s program, they learned that one member, Kevin Johnson of the Des Moines Register, had upgraded his press using equipment from Harland Simon (Booth 2261). Johnson is discussing his experiences with the retrofit in a members-only session today at 4:00 pm, which will be followed by a Harland Simon-sponsored reception. Tomorrow, Travis Komidar of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle will discuss his newspaper’s experience upgrading its press with equipment from ABB (Booth 1764).

Although manrug is independent from manroland the press manufacturer (Booth 2210), there is a manroland-sponsored lunch on tomorrow for user group members, and manroland will give presentations to user group members on both days of the conference. Users will have the opportunity to learn and ask questions about manroland’s new corporate structure, its products, and partnerships.
