Interacting with your peers has long been at the heart of association membership. Nowhere is that more evident than on the very busy National Association of Quick Printers (NAQP) listserv, where members ask and answer questions about issues that range from printing problems and special finishing resources to supplier services and workplace policies.
Now NAQP members have an even more robust medium for these discussions. As part of the National Association for Printing Leadership (NAPL), NAQP members can meet at NAPL Connect, a new secure online community created exclusively for NAPL/NAQP members.
The new interactive forum, which debuted this spring, not only helps bring members closer together by allowing them to connect, share, communicate, and get rapid answers to their questions, but also lets them find others with similar interests and create a network based on their shared attributes or interests. And, once connected, members can get to know each other better by viewing profiles that include pictures, education information, and other content.
Unlike traditional listservs, NAPL Connect stores messages and content within the community, not in individual members’ inboxes, so participants don’t have to worry about deleting an email and losing valuable information. Content on the community is also searchable via keywords, making it easy to find information that is relevant to members’ specific needs.
Among the features that are unavailable on a listserv, NAPL Connect also has a searchable Member Directory, blogging capabilities, and lets participants share streaming audio and video.
In addition, members of the new community have complete control over their NAPL Connect inbox. They can choose what to see and how often to be notified, and they do not have to worry about ever being hit with multiple out-of-office replies.
Participants can set up their mailbox so that they will never receive notifications about discussions that are not relevant to them, but will always be assured that important discussions will reach their inbox. Easy-to-use email tools allow them to follow postings or reply directly from their inbox if they prefer.
Individual discussion groups can be created for special interests or event attendees, and the community features a mobile app that lets members connect with their peers, view and participate in discussions, and stay current with industry news, all in real time and on the go!

The annual Marketing Plus Awards program is seeking entries from NAQP members and others in the quick and small commercial printing segment. The competition is for self-promotional marketing initiatives executed by industry companies between June 1, 2012, and May 31, 2013.
Awards will be presented in each of 12 marketing categories, including such diverse areas as market research, data management, website, direct mail, customer/community events, vertical markets, lead generation, and corporate identity.
Judging criteria include creativity, design, visual appeal, and production quality of each entry, as well as marketing plan and results. Companies may enter in multiple categories and submit multiple entries in the same category.
There are two entry levels: Level 1 for companies with sales of $2 million or less; and Level 2 for companies with sales above $2 million. Level 1 fee: $50 per entry; three entries or more, $40 each. Level 2: $75 per entry; three entries or more, $60 each.
Award winners will receive industry-wide recognition in the trade press and at the award presentation during the Soderstrom Awards Dinner in Chicago on September 7, immediately preceding the September 8-12 PRINT 13 show. Get an entry form and rules at www.napl.org/marketingaward.
With the announcement of keynote speakers for the 2013 NAQP Owners Conference, November 7-10 in Nashville, TN, it is clear that the conference is being built according to members’ specifications.
