Inside the Pressroom: Embracing Technology

Inside the press arena on the PRINT 13 show floor, attendees can see firsthand the full breadth of printing production technology, from cutting-edge digital printers and presses to the chemicals and accessories necessary to keep the pressroom humming.

Given the growth of digital printing, the equipment that makes it happen is out in full force. Spotlighting a hybrid workflow, Komori America (Booth 1251) is printing an eight-page brochure on the six-color Lithrone SX29, and then personalizing and finishing it on the Konica Minolta bizhub C8000. Komori and Konica Minolta (Booth 518) have also joined forces to develop the KM-1/IS29 inkjet press, on display as a technology preview.

Konica Minolta is also highlighting its next-generation bizhub press models, with a redesigned print engine for high-quality production color. The bizhub C1100 is built for long, unattended press runs, and delivers a maximum monthly duty cycle of one million impressions.

New from RISO (Booth 544) is the ComColor X1 Series of full-color inkjet printers. The ComColor 9150 and 9110 reach output speeds of 150 ppm for simplex printing, and run with new fast-drying, fade-resistant, water-resistant oil-based inks that prevent set-off and paper curl.

MGI (Booth 3213) is presenting two new options for the JETvarnish 3D. For the JETvarnish 3D Twin, a second print engine is available that can boost 3D effects production speed up to 2,234 12x18" sheets per hour. Users also have the option of double coating thickness in one pass up to 200 microns. A second option is iFoil, a 100% digital solution for applying foil inline on the JETvarnish 3D.

Epson (Booth 1231) is demonstrating how its latest printing innovations are directly impacting real-world printing needs and applications across a range of markets. It is showing its SureColor S-Series 64" solvent printers for signage; the SureColor T-Series plotters for architectural, engineering, and corporate graphics; and the SureColor F-Series dye-sublimation transfer printers for polyester fabrics and promotional products.

Xeikon (Booth 841) is highlighting its flagship press model for the document and commercial printing applications, the Xeikon 8800. The company will run a multitude of applications, including different formats of high-end direct marketing pieces. The press prints at a top speed of 63 fpm and can handle monthly duty cycles of up to 10 million pages.

Digital Information’s InkZone ink presets and closed-loop product line, with automatic ink key settings for faster setup and BestMatch capability to print to ISO standards, are being show by CMYK Distributors, Inc. (Booth 969). Also see the new DJet, a double-sided, high quality imposition proofing system, and Filter Klear Fountain Filtration Systems by Keystone.

For monitoring and measuring fountain solution, Metafix (Booth 110) is showcasing its Fountain Solution Control System. With key operating parameters for the fountain solution monitored and reported in real time, and intelligent ratio adjustments made, the end result is consistent and repeatable conductivity and improved print quality.

Nortec Systems (Booth 3476) is presenting the TurboFogNeo air humidification system, a part of the Draabe product line. It creates optimum RH levels for lower operating costs and operates with a high-pressure pump for 100% atomization of bacteria free water.

Doyle Systems (Booth 108) is presenting a new Generation II Cyclone dust collector, featuring new design benefits requiring less maintenance and a contact-free cleaner that removes visible and sub-visible particles from substrates.

Deyang Litong Printing Machinery (Booth 1260) is highlighting an automatic air table that conveys materials easily; a stack jogger with a floating-vibrating table that align plates isolated from the vibrating table, allowing it to vibrate paper thinner than 60g; and a symmetric tilted pile turning system that turns the pile in less than 50 seconds.

New to the North American market is Uchida Yoko Global’s (Booth 4618) Countron Touch paper counting machine The single head counting machine with suction blade counting technology is capable of counting a pile at 2,500 sheets per minute, and features a touchscreen control panel for easy setup.

4over (Booth 4261) is showcasing its suite of services, including premium packaging for folded packaging and short runs; roll labels in popular shapes and sizes, vibrant colors, or white or clear substrates; and direct mail short runs on premium quality card stocks with in-line addressing and two-sided UV printing.

UV systems manufacturer GEW (Booth 3643) is debuting the E2C energy2cure system, which uses 42% less energy and permits full color, process printing at full production speed with as little power as 90 W/cm (230 W/inch). The system delivers a 42% CO2 reduction in environmental performance.

Sajo Technologies (Booth 109) is unveiling a new UV/conventional pumping and ink leveling system that allows printers to use existing 2.5 or 5.0 kg. cans. The pumping system sits directly on the press frame and pumps directly from the cans in conjunction with Sajo’s ink leveling and ink agitating systems.
