PRINT 13 Showstoppers

PRINT 13 is the largest graphic arts trade show in North America. The quadrennial printing equipment extravaganza will be held in Chicago, IL, September 8-12. Here are some of the top products to look for at the show. You can follow news and announcements from the show as well as hundreds of product descriptions by linking to the official PRINT 13 Show Daily from MyPRINTResource.com.

The theme for PRINT 13 is “Innovate, Integrate, Communicate”, giving attendees the word up front that this show will focus on print driven multi-channel communications for each of 12 key market segments. Every aspect of the show has been crafted to stimulate 24/7 networking between industry experts and peers, and to facilitate connections among buyers and vendors to find the solutions that are just right for them.

This year the Chicago-based global print event is joined by the CPP EXPO, which will showcase package printing and converting technology along with a related education track. PRINT 13 also welcomes more than 60 other co-located events—conferences, user-groups, galas, meetings, and more.

PRINT 13 will host nearly 600 exhibitors who will fill the South Hall of McCormick Place and present their wares to the 12 targeted market segments: Commercial Printers, In-Plant Printers/Corporate/Government/Education Print Centers; Sign & Display Shops/Wide-Format Printers; Package & Label Printers & Converters; Quick /Small Commercial Printers; Photo Imagers & Retailers; Transactional Printers; Mailing & Fulfillment Professionals, Book Printers/Publishers, Newspaper Printers/Publishers, Marketing/Creative Services Professionals, and Media/Print Buyers. It is significant to note that 80% of attendees at this global marketplace are decision makers and key influencers.

The newest show floor attraction at PRINT 13 is the Inkjet Candy Store, a special wide-format inkjet area that will deliver live demonstrations of the latest technologies. DELIVER!, the newly re-imagined mailing and fulfillment center, is sponsored by the USPS and the Association of Marketing Service Providers (AMSP), formerly MFSA. It is still the world’s largest mailing show anywhere.

Also new for 2013 is Photo Finish—The Photo Imaging Pavilion, sponsored by Photo Imaging News and SPI Convention & Shoot-Out. It will bring together services for photo, photo book, wide-format and all-sized imaging, creation, finishing related equipment, products, software, substrates, and more.

Another new feature for this year's show is Sidelines—The Expanded Revenue Streams Pavilion. This special floor section will open the doors to a broad array of new revenue sources, including specialty printed products and advertising specialties.

PRINT 13 has also re-engineered the Wide-Format Pavilion into an area that is now simply called BIG. Sponsored by the International Sign Association (ISA), this dedicated section will host all things big and wide, including output devices, software, media/substrates, inks, finishing equipment, and supplies.

Other show highlights include The Marketing Theater, the return of the Printerverse, Future Print, Education Main Street, and GREENspace. Industry gurus will be available at four "Ask the Expert" stations throughout the show floor. There are also four Learning Theaters on the exhibition floor for wide-format, mailing, marketing, and cutting edge technologies.

Whatever you may be looking for to take your company to the next level, you’re sure to find it at PRINT 13.

manroland web systems, Booth 3143

Producing with print-on-demand to optimize costs and being fast on the market: these are the challenges of digital book production. The FormerLine system from manroland web systems is the industrial-strength solution to these challenges. Both inline production and offline finishing of pre-printed reels is possible. Together with the VBC collator, the system generates stacked signatures of up to 6,000 auxiliary-glued book blocks up to 100 mm thick, per hour.

manroland web systems’ FoldLine digital finishing solution is able to produce newspapers in any format (tabloid, broadsheet, Berlin) in both in-line and off-line operations. Also included in the FoldLine portfolio are brochures, magazines, and individual book signatures. FoldLine is designed to produce up to 96 pages (48 pages broadsheet) with a web speed of up to 300 meters/min and a web width of up to 1,060 mm. The system can output up to 2,700 broadsheet newspaper copies with 32 pages, 9,100 bound brochures, or 14,000 16-page signatures per hour. FoldLine can quickly be prepared for new jobs: the makeready times for format and paper changes are minimal, and changes to volumes can be made without interrupting production.

ACTEGA Kelstar, Booth 558

ACTEGA Kelstar's UV Soft Touch Coating for the Graphic Arts Industry has the following technical ranges for the commerical and packaging industry. Run/Application: On sheetfed presses, run speeds of 8,000 to 10,000 IPH are recommended, applying the coating with a 10-14 bcm anilox. (Higher volume aniloxes can be used, but, the cure speed will be slower).

Screen printing the UV-8820ST is possible, provided that extra precaution steps are taken. Some steps include using a water resistant “knock- out” emulsion on the screen, not leaving the coating sit idle for any length of time (see below), and not applying the coating thicker than with a 305 mesh. The coating will come out soft, but, will “post-cure” quickly. Cure Testing: A cured film of UV-8820ST will typically yield 10 to 20 MEK double rubs, have a gloss level

W+D, Booth 3922

W+D is premiering its new W+D BB700 S2 with TIprint 4dL, a direct mail inserter that operates at speeds of up to 16,000 envelopes/hour. The BB700 S2 prints a blank, unfilled, flat envelope before inserting materials into the envelope. Printing flat envelopes enables the inserter to print on the front and back side of the open seal flap in a single pass without having to turn the envelope or add additional inkjet printing capabilities.

Offset competitive quality can be printed on standard 24-pound white wove envelope stock. This is a function of the high-speed vacuum transport belt that moves the substrate through the machine and positions it as close to the inkjet print heads as possible. The formulation of Hi-Def water base inkjet inks produces a vivid and wide color gamut on standard envelope paper. Quality improves on papers optimized for inkjet and exceeds offset in many print categories.

The BB7002S uses an 8.66-inch wide inkjet print head. Combined with Hi-Def water based inkjet inks, it yields the lowest cost per imaged unit for any current generation DOD inkjet systems in its class.
