MGI Digital Graphic Technology Creates a Sensation with JETvarnish 3D

The Sunday morning conference staged by MGI Digital Graphic Technology (Booth 3213) wowed audience members right from the start, presenting a series of videos set to a driving musical score. In each video, tourists on Paris streets were handed sheets on which 3D images of objects ranging from a Beatles LP to golf clubs had been printed.

None of the tourists were able to resist the temptation to touch the images.

All the images had been produced on the company’s JETvarnish 3D, the worlds’ fastest digital inkjet spot UV coater, which is being given its American debut at PRINT 13.

Since the JETvarnish 3D was introduced at Drupa in January, there have been 32 installations of the machine worldwide. Customers have included offset printers, digital printers, and trade finishers. Those that now have had the technology for three to five months recently convened on a panel to offer their comments, according to Kevin Abergel, MGI Digital Graphic Technology Director of Marketing.

Panelists reported viewing their acquisition of the JETvarnish 3D as a leap of faith not focused on ROI, but intended to drive sales, Abergel said. In many cases, they are using 3D as a lead generator.

Abergel noted print service providers in general are facing a reduction in profit margins. It’s a tougher environment in which to create earnings, and sometimes printing isn’t enough, he said. Some of the early adopters are generating profit margins of 80-90%, fully amortized, versus the four to six percent many PSPs are enduring. That’s the impact of the 3D effect, and the differentiation it is able to bring about, he says.

The JETvarnish 3D also offers a level of quality above that of screen printing, low cost of production, high production speeds, and quick set up and ease of use, as well as the ability to calculate production costs to the penny in advance, Abergel said.

The JETvarnish 3D offers a bevy of new field upgradeable options. Among them are:

The iFoil: This inline option lets printers and trade finishers apply true hot foil digitally with or without an “embossed” look and feel, giving finished pieces high value at a fraction of the cost of traditional approaches.

The Twin: This option allows a doubling of speeds for 3D spot UV coating with raised effects, compared to the standard configuration.

MGI’s JETvarnish 3D was awarded the coveted 2013 InterTech Technology Award for the iFoil and Twin options and named a PRINT 13 MUST SEE ’EMS.
