HIMSS, a nonprofit organization with the goal to promote the best use of information technology in the healthcare industry, held its annual conference this year in Orlando February 23- 26. The event brought in over 1,200 exhibitors and over 40,000 attendees – including physicians, nurses, IT administration, and healthcare providers. Some focused topics and themes among exhibitors and attendees included Meaningful Use, interoperability, patient engagement, mobile health (mHealth), analytics, population health, and the preparation for the ICD-10 codes (which go into effect in October 2014). There were also many new products and partnership announcements.
Ricoh announced their strategic partnership with InterSystems to develop new information solutions for acute healthcare that can improve workflow, cost-efficiency, and patient care. InterSystems provides a health informatics platform, InterSystems HealthShare, enabling interoperability and analytics for action across a hospital network, community, region or nation.
Ricoh’s Healthcare Camera (G700SE) and solution were demoed at their booth revealing how clinicians are able to photograph a newly admitted patient’s injury and then automatically insert the image into the patient’s EHR. The clinician simply uses the camera to scan a barcode on the patient’s wristband and add information to describe the injury. From there, the image and data wirelessly attach to the patient’s EHR. InterSystems HealthShare integrates the camera, EHR, and Ricoh technology.
Ricoh also exhibited a number of partner solutions integrated with Ricoh hardware at their booth including Nuance, DocuWare, NSi, OpenText, DocuScripts, and Access.
Although Ricoh’s recent acquisition of mindSHIFT was not an announcement made during HIMSS (it was announced at the end of January, 2014), there is value in mindSHIFT for vertical play. Specifics on how mindSHIFT will be integrated into Ricoh’s offerings, however, still remain to be seen.
