Takeaways from 2013 EFI Connect
By Denise Gustavson - Tuesday January 22, 2013
Last week I had the opportunity to attend EFI’s Connect conference at the Wynn Las Vegas. Now in its 14th year, EFI Connect caters to graphic arts business leaders' need for continued innovation and education and profitable growth opportunities. Graphic arts professionals had the opportunity to participate in more than 150 sessions covering MIS/ERP software, Web-to-print systems, industrial inkjet printers, and Fiery technology. In addition to featuring VUTEk, EFI Wide Format and Jetrion inkjet production printers, Connect included a newly enhanced line of JDF-certified Fiery digital front ends, as well as a complete lineup of EFI Productivity Software products. EFI also demonstrated systems from its two recent acquisitions... -
You Don't Appreciate it Until It's Gone
By Denise Gustavson - Tuesday June 12, 2012
Signs are something we more or less take for granted. You get on the highway and you know there will be signs that help you find the right exit, the right street, even the right address. Signs warn us when the road up ahead is treacherous or if there's a traffic camera at the next intersection. I have to admit that I didn't realize how much I relied on signs until I was in Ireland and in some cities, they simply didn't exist. It can become very frustrating to circle around a National Park that you can see on a road atlas, but there are no signs on the road to indicate the entrance to the park, the road you're on, the speed limit on the road, or even if you're in the right place going in the right direction. It's even more frustrating when... -
Greetings from Germany!
By Denise Gustavson - Friday May 4, 2012It's only been one day since the offical start of drupa 2012 and I have to admit that while the dogs are tired of walking already--the show takes up 17 buildings on how many acres I don't know--but there is a lot of wide-format news already announced. Press conferences on the first day included news from companies such as Durst--with several new introductions including a corragated packaging press configuration for the Rho 1000 and a high speed label press; Ricoh--with an entrance to the wide-format market with a latex inkjet printer (perhaps because of the arrangement with Mimaki who is using Ricoh heads in their printers...haven't had the chance to ask that question yet.); HP--with the official introduction of the FB7600; Mutoh's new... -
Food for Thought on a Grand Scale
By Denise Gustavson - Tuesday January 31, 2012I've been following the billboard ban issue in California over the last year or so, so it was kind of interesting when I saw a news item last week about a new documentary to hit the Dallas Film Festival later this year (April 12-22). This film made its worldwide debut at New York's Documentary Festival back in November 2011. "This Space Available" is a documentary about Sao Paulo and other movements to rid cities of billboards. (More info about the film can be found here .) In This Space Available, filmmaker Gwenaëlle Gobé brings to life stories of people from around the world who are fighting to reclaim their public spaces from what they term "visual pollution"—aka billboards, building wraps, etc. In the film, she lays the blame... -
2012 is Your Time to Shine
By Denise Gustavson - Tuesday January 3, 2012With 2011 completely behind us, we've all turned our attention to 2012. But as we sit, only a few days into the new year, this gives us a unique vantage point to look back and see what worked—and what didn't—and also see how we fared during this economic uncertainty. This year you'll have two opportunities to share your opinions—and give yourself a little bit of shameless self-promotion in the process. We all need the opportunity to toot our own horns every now and then. Make sure you don't pass up this opportunity! Wide-Format Imaging Top Products Awards So what were the best wide-format new products in 2011? Readers and subscribers to Wide-Format Imaging and MyPrintResource have the opportunity to cast their vote and weigh... -
Post-Show Thoughts
By Denise Gustavson - Tuesday October 25, 2011I have to say that I'm glad to be home. It's been a long and busy trade show season and year. With the SGIA Expo as the last trade show for me for the year, it always marks the "end" of a year and the start of the next—with a little vacation thrown in before the new year officially begins. I will be the first to admit that I'm not a huge fan of New Orleans. The heat and humidity generally around the majority of the year does a number on me—and my hair. I try to stay away from fried food as a general rule and Cajun food and I just don't get along. The scene down on Bourbon Street isn't my cup of tea, either. And no matter how many times I go to the city, I always end up eating some kind of fried or Cajun food down on Bourbon Street... -
What's New?
By Denise Gustavson - Friday October 21, 2011"So, what did you see on the trade show floor that stood out?" At every trade show, without fail, I get that question—or a close approximation—from just about every appointment. And it's not surprising. I spend several hours meeting with exhibitors and learning about the latest products they're bringing to market. And in many cases, many of these people I'm meeting for appointments have not had the chance to walk around to see what was on the show floor yet. So, what did I see today at SGIA 2011 that stood out? There were a few things that certainly come to mind. 1. New Ilford Media Lines While Ilford has primarily been known for its photographic media, at SGIA they announced two new product lines: Bio Media and OmniJet... -
Keeping Busy in the Big Easy
By Denise Gustavson - Thursday October 20, 2011While unseasonably cool temperatures greeted me on my arrival to New Orleans for SGIA 2011, it certainly didn't slow me down when it came to the first day of the show. A few notes from my meetings over the course of the day… SGIA Opening SGIA opened the first day of the Expo with a press breakfast and overview of the show. Michael Robertson reported that 36 percent of attendees registered for the show were first-timers. It makes me wonder what is different about New Orleans and SGIA this year to warrant such a high number of first-time registrants and what market segments these folks have come from. I didn't get the chance to ask Michael, but it's on my list of questions I need to follow-up on with SGIA. Dan Marx... -
Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish
By Denise Gustavson - Thursday October 6, 2011I got the news last night that Steve Jobs had passed away and much like everyone else, have been reflecting on his work and the innovations he helped inspire. I didn't know him personally. I never had the opportunity to meet him or interview him. I just used the products his company invented. In grade school, I learned "keyboard" on one of the earliest Macintosh computers. My first home desktop computer was an Apple—as was my second. My first laptop, you guessed it: a Mac (followed by several others as the years and technology progressed. While my first mobile phone was a huge Nokia, when I finally graduated to a smartphone I turned to the iPhone (and won't look back now). For music…an iPod of course—and I have several... -
Remember.
By Denise Gustavson - Tuesday September 6, 2011There are dates and events in everyone's lives that are pivotal moments; moments that turn everything on its side and upside down; moments which change the way we view the world and everything within. August 31, 1997 was one such date for me. While the world that day was morning the loss of Princess Diana, I had only just arrived in a small hospital in Canada at the end of a 750 mile road trip—a few hours too late. My grandmother had died a few short hours before as my family and I were racing to get there in time for my mother to say her goodbyes. Up until that point in time, I hadn't personally been affected by death, but at that moment when we walked into the hospital and were told we were too late everything simply…shifted. June...
