In a world first, Standard will demonstrate the Smart Binding System designed for continuous-feed digital print in Booth 1902. The solution will produce short-run, variable books of different size and thickness from a roll with no manual touch points. As book run-lengths continue to drop, costly and labor intensive finishing steps can erode book manufacturing profits. To address this, the Smart Binding System features advanced automation, quick changeovers, and low labor costs, allowing efficient production of short run-length books from a pre-printed roll. A Standard Hunkeler UW6 unwinds a 20" wide pre-printed roll which is cut into sheets in the Standard Hunkeler CS6-I rotary cutter and then folded to signatures in the Standard Horizon AF-566F folder. The signatures are stacked and glued into book blocks by Horizon's new BBS-40 and presented to the Horizon SB-09V nine-clamp perfect binder. The clamps in the SB-09V binder change over automatically for the varying book thickness. Bound books are intelligently accumulated prior to delivery to the HT-1000V variable three-knife trimmer, which dynamically changes over for format and thickness. The entire system will be producing at a rate of 2,000 variable-thickness and variable-format size books per hour.
In Booth 1902, Standard Horizon will show the new BQ-280PUR Perfect Binder offering single-clamp PUR perfect binding with professional quality in a compact footprint! Specially designed to handle the unique requirements of digital print, the binder features quick set-up and changeover for shorter production runs, book-of-one capability, and even in-line verification for document integrity. The BQ-280 uses environmentally-friendly PUR glue and features a unique elevator delivery system that gently carries the freshly bound book down without damage. The large color touchscreen features intuitive icons for easy, single-person operation. Book block and cover information can be input at the touchscreen for quick and automatic setup, including carriage clamp, milling, glue tank, nipping, and cover feeder. The automated, sensor-activated digital caliper system ensures consistent measurement of book block thickness every time, eliminating operator discrepancy. Book thickness is automatically measured by placing the book block into the digital caliper. The caliper slides into position with no manual intervention and thickness data automatically begins set-up. Capable of production speeds up to 350-400 books per hour, the binder can also handle extended spine lengths up to 15.5”. Ideal for the production of digitally printed books, personalized photo books, smaller sample runs, and other ultra short-run work!
Standard Finishing Systems has introduced the Standard Horizon BQ-470V - for variable - is designed to fit true book-of-one production environments while still offering productivity for longer runs. Each book block is measured for thickness using the BQ-470 digital caliper, and the data is transferred to the binder automatically. Set-up for the next available clamp begins almost immediately, while the prior book is in production, causing minimal idle time between variable books and an increase in production rates. This capability will be field retrofittable, so existing BQ-470 customers can also add this functionality.
The dynamic unwind module from the latest POPP generation is especially suitable for flexible, high-performance use. Easy handling, thanks to automated loop control and user guide with touch-panel, reduces setup time to a minimum. Rolls with diameters of up to 1370 mm can be loaded semi-automatically. A triple loop control guarantees optimal and precisely tensioned winding of the paper web and helps with the processing of light as well as heavy paper weights. The loop weight is fully decoupled during neutral mode, thus guaranteeing optimal feed, also on high-performance digital printers.
Standard Finishing Systems has released the StitchLiner 6000 Digital, a continuous-feed saddlestitching solution for the digital print market. The unit will be integrated with Hunkeler's UW6 unwinder and CS6 rotary cutter for production of up to 6,000 booklets per hour, in-line with continuous feed printers. It offers in-line cover feeding and non-stop booklet production on a range of paper stocks at up to 600 feet per minute. Variable sheet-count booklets can be produced using barcode scanning or mark reading. The system features icon-based color touch screen control and fully automated set-up. The system allows the same operators who are running the printer to manage post-press functions.
The new Standard Horizon CRF-362 Creaser/Folder has been designed to handle the unique requirements of creasing and folding digital color output across a wide range of light and heavy weight stocks, coated or uncoated. Creasing and folding can be done in one pass for easy and accurate processing of a variety of applications such as restaurant menus, greeting cards, book covers, and marketing collateral. Capable of up to ten crease lines on a sheet, the system uses an impact scoring technology that eliminates or minimizes cracking of the stock or printed image. Set-up and changeovers – including fold pattern, creasing number, and up/down crease selection – can be easily achieved through the high resolution color touch screen designed for simple and intuitive operation.
The HOF-400 from Standard Finishing Systems (Booth 1244) is the latest in Horizon’s line of versatile high-speed sheet feeders. The HOF-400 can be connected to the SPF-200 Series Bookletmaker and the StitchLiner 5500 for saddle stitching of digitally printed output at speeds up to 45,000 sheets per hour. The modular system can be configured to fit various customer requirements. Variable page count production is possible with the standard mark reader, which the operator can quickly change between top and bottom reading for different applications. The HOF-400 can accommodate a maximum sheet size of 14x24" to produce landscape format booklets or calendars in-line with the new SPF-200L Landscape Bookletmaker, yet another solution that will debut at Graph Expo.
Standard Hunkeler (Booth 1244) is introducing its WI6 Web Inspection System, shown as part of a roll-to-in-line folding solution and capturing high resolution images of the full web width for in-line verification and integrity analysis of the printed roll. The WI6 System provides continuous digital print quality assurance to customers for mass mailing, print on demand, and variable data applications. Print and integrity problems are immediately detected so incorrect documents can be automatically diverted and instantly reprinted to guarantee error-free output, minimize waste, and reduce downtime. The system can perform up to fifty different checks on print quality such as the detection of ink spills or blank streaks, verification of barcodes or postal codes, and image quality inspection. The WI6 is available in simplex or duplex configurations for color or monochrome on a 20- or 42-inch web, and can run from 1-up to 4-up production without reconfiguration. A user-friendly touch screen interface enables the operator to define different job templates which are automatically selected by the system. In the Standard booth, the WI6 will be scanning printed output coming from the Hunkeler UW6 unwinder and DP6 Dynamic Perforator before enter the cutting, folding and stacking modules.
