When Durk-Jorrit van der Eems, owner of Dutch printer Van der Eems, specified the features he wanted from his new laminator, he said that it would have to be cost effective at runs of ten sheets and of 10,000 sheets. A chance conversation with local Heidelberg agent Tetterode Nederland revealed that the company was about to take on the agency for Autobond in Holland.
“Tetterode said Autobond manufactured laminators that were perfect for our requirements, in particular our need to successfully laminate work produced on our HP 5000s as well as our multi-colour Heidelberg and Manroland offset presses,” says Durk-Jorrit van der Eems, who is the fourth generation to run the company.
“I travelled to Autobond’s factory in the UK with someone from Tetterode and was immediately impressed by the build quality of its equipment. Autobond is also a family run business and the knowledge and professional approach of the Gilmores inspire great confidence.
“We had already been operating a small laminator for our short run work, and I had examined in detail what was currently on the market from other suppliers, so had a good idea of what I was looking at when I saw what the Autobond Mini laminators could achieve in terms of quality, speed of make-ready and throughput.”
Subsequently, a Mini 74 T was installed at one of Van der Eems three factories in the north of Holland. Autobond redesigned its Mini range during 2010 and these models now have an even smaller footprint than previously, making them extremely compact. The Mini 74 T is a B2 thermal laminator that will handle sheets from A4 to 74 x 74 cm at speeds of up to 45 metres per minute. Stock can be from 90 gsm to 650 gsm. Make-ready between jobs normally requires only two or three sheets, making the Mini 74 T highly efficient at short runs, while the fast running speeds makes it equally cost effective on long runs.
The laminator can be supplied with a Stahl suction drum feeder or a Heidelberg Speedmaster feed head (the Mini 74 TH), which increases speed to 60 metres per minute. Van der Eems has chosen the Stahl feeder and uses the Mini to laminate work produced at all three of its sites, which are based in Oosterend Gem Littenser. The company, which was formed in 1906, employs 50 people and produces a varied selection of work for customers spread throughout the Netherlands.
“The Autobond Mini 74 T was in production the day after it was delivered and since then we have successfully laminated a wide variety of printed material, produced on both our digital and offset presses,” says Durk-Jorrit van der Eems. “The Mini has proved to be straightforward to operate, reliable, and incorporates a range of features that we have not seen on any other laminator.”
Tetterode Nederland has its Dutch headquarters in Amsterdam and took on the Autobond agency shortly before Ipex 2010. In addition to representing Heidelberg, the company sells a comprehensive range of pre-press and finishing systems. Ferry Bakhuis is product manager (Benelux) for finishing.
“We had been considering taking on the agency for a sheet-fed laminator for some time and there is no doubt that the Autobond models lead the market,” says Mr Bakhuis. “The technology, quality, and productivity offered by Autobond’s laminators are unmatched and the latest models include some revolutionary breakthroughs.
