The Ad Council presented Lamar Advertising Company with the Silver Bell Award at the 2011 OAAA/TAB National Convention & Trade Show in Miami, FL. The Silver Bell Award is presented annually to media outlets that exemplify exceptional generosity and leadership in supporting public service messages.
"We are proud to honor Lamar Advertising Company with our Silver Bell Award for its lasting dedication to public service," said Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council. "The Silver Bell recognizes media outlets that go above and beyond in disseminating our critical social messages. Through its ongoing support of our PSA campaigns on both traditional and digital boards, as well as its extraordinary contribution following the Gulf oil spill, Lamar exemplifies this distinguished honor."
For decades, Lamar has supported Ad Council PSAs on its inventory of out of home advertising displays, and in 2010 it began to post them on digital billboards.
Following the tragic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico last year, Lamar quickly developed outdoor designs for the Ad Council to be used on both traditional and digital billboards throughout the Gulf Coast. The designs were shared with other outdoor companies in the region.
Nancy Fletcher, OAAA president & CEO, commented, "Most outdoor advertising companies regularly provide free ad space to groups that cannot afford paid advertising, but last year Lamar exceeded all expectations, striving to quickly help the Ad Council and a community in distress. OAAA congratulates Lamar on a well-deserved honor."
In total, the out of home advertising industry last year donated nearly $250 million in advertising space to Ad Council public service advertisements, over $25 million more than in 2009.
Fletcher added, "The outdoor industry is proud to work closely with the Ad Council in helping to put these positive messages in front of the public. OAAA and its members are dedicated to community service and creative excellence, and the Ad Council provides the means to accomplish both goals."
