Thoroughbred Printing Bounces Back with New Heidelberg Installations After Devastating Fire

Thoroughbred Printing in Lexington, KY recently installed a 3-station, 30” USA B30 Stahlfolder to replace an existing 26” Stahlfolder lost to fire in the spring of this year. The new folder is equipped with four combination buckle plates per station, gatefold unit, and rotary scoring and perfing capability.

“We lost 40 percent of our building, 60 percent of our pressroom, and a piece of our prepress department in the fire,” said Barry Henry, owner. “We were fortunate to be able to outsource work to our sister company, Advertiser Printers in northern Kentucky, while we rebuilt.” (The company has another sibling facility, Allied Printing, in Hamilton, Ohio.)

In the wake of the fire, Thoroughbred has equipped its new prepress operation with Heidelberg’s Prinect Prepress Manager workflow, and now promotes web-based file uploading and remote proofing via Prinect Remote Access. The company’s pressroom hosts a 40” Speedmaster 102S 6-color press and a 40” Speedmaster 102ZP 2-color machine, as well as a 12x18” Heidelberg “windmill” letterpress. In addition to the new Stahlfolder, whose flexibility and fast makeready have earned the praise of Thoroughbred’s operators, the company’s full-service bindery also hosts 20” and 26” Stahlfolders, as well as a 42” POLAR cutting system.

In business since 1970, Thoroughbred Printing describes itself as a general commercial printer serving clients throughout the Southeast, including universities and their affiliated sports programs. The company employs 20 full- and part-time staff.

All-Color Business Ramps Up Folding Operations with Stahlfolder TH-66

All Color Business Specialties in Farmingdale, NY has taken delivery of a new Stahlfolder TH-66 buckle-plate folder with feeder and stream delivery from Heidelberg. Established in 1959 and incorporated in the state of New York, All Color is a high-volume, wholesale printer to the local and regional trade. The company employs a staff of 35 and serves a clientele located across Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. Its menu of services includes 4-color offset, spot color and digital printing, envelope printing, high-speed inkjet addressing, and a full-service bindery.

According to company owner Billy Bogue, the TH-66 folder adds capacity and gives the company the ability to score and fold larger print jobs, including oblongs, newsletters, pamphlets at high speed.

“The machine has not stopped running since it was installed,” Bogue said, adding that his operators especially admire the folder’s Airstream register table that enables precise sheet alignment without the risk of marking.

All Color boasts an all-Heidelberg pressroom, including a pair of Speedmaster SM 52 perfectors, a Speedmaster SM 74 perfector, and several Printmaster QM 46-2s. Alongside the new TH-66 folder, the company’s bindery also hosts a pair of USA B-20, continuous-feed folders, a POLAR 115 paper cutter, Stitchmaster ST 90 saddlestitcher, and a Heidelberg “windmill” letterpress used for die cutting.

“We continue to choose Heidelberg because of their dedication to quality and service,” Bogue said. “We believe Heidelberg represents the industry standard.”
