At drupa 2012, print media trade fair, the Type Directors Club of New York (TDC) show will not just be accompanied by the renowned writing design competition TCD2 but also by the new TDC Title Design, a competition dedicated to innovative film opening credits and moving image typography. For 65 years, the Type Directors Club of New York has dealt with the improvement of typography and the most important competition worldwide on the topic of writing continues to provide new records through new offshoots and more internationality.
“drupa and the TDC show have been close partners for over 20 years. Graphic design has had an established presence at drupa for many years thanks to the support of Messe Düsseldorf! Where would the presentation of the newest print and media technologies be without the latest trends and models with which you can produce the best in communication with writing?" stated Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs, Chairman of the German Committee of the TDC of New York.
The 58th TDC show in Hall 6, booth B 06 will offer creative suggestions, artistic ideas and the latest trends in visual communication in addition to a wide array of technology and innovations. For the second time, the booth has been designed by students of the University of Applied Sciences in Würzburg (Germany) under the guidance of TDC committee member Prof. Gertrud Nolte. The students were not only involved in the preparation and design of the booth but they also helped to build it and will be in charge of the TDC show on site throughout the 14 days of drupa 2012 (May 3 - 16 in Düsseldorf, Germany).
At drupa 2012, works with the title "Awarded for Typographic Excellence" can be seen in the drupa cube in Hall 7A. Diego Vainesman, President of TDC, and Carol Wahler, the longstanding drupa TDC director, will come from New York in order to congratulate the German winners personally on May 3 at 3:00 pm. An award in the TDC was for many designers the start of a great career because the selection criteria of the TDC show are strict and the jury procedure is considered to be impartial.
Contestants from 33 countries competed at the 58th TDC show. From almost 1,600 entries, only 223 awards for works from 21 countries were selected, including 47 pieces from Germany. No easy task for the jury, which included design stars such as Luise Fili and Ray Fenwick, since the level of all the entries was extremely high. As always, the results of the show represent a wide range: from do-it-yourself style of handwriting to the growing category of time-based typography in films and trailers including the new 3D film technology. Especially in the Title Design extra show, which is incorporated into the exhibition, the limits of typography are extended and new possibilities presented.
Maxim Zhukov, Roger Black, Mathew Carter, Paul Shaw and Erik Spiekermann selected new and thus unused but brilliantly made typefaces from 173 entries from 27 countries in the TDC2 competition: 13 typeface families received the coveted prize "Design Excellence" from the TDC which, with its strict benchmark, is remaining true to its objective to nurture the graphic arts community with outstanding typography.
Diego Vainesman, the current TDC President, will also give a presentation on Saturday, May 5 on "Type is sexy - and I know it!" at the drupa cube as part of the creative weekend. International experts from the type and photo scene will meet for a weekend of inspirations in the drupa cube. Tickets for the entire creative weekend are available for Euro 199 at the drupa 2012 ticket shop
