Legal Directories Transitions to 100% Digital Printing with Oce VarioPrint 6320 Ultra System

Océ, a Canon Group company and an international leader in digital document management, announced that Legal Directories Publishing Company, Inc. has installed the Océ VarioPrint 6320 Ultra system and the award-winning Océ PRISMAprepare makeready software.

Founded in 1935, Legal Directories Publishing Company, Inc. has grown to be the largest publisher of state legal directories in the United States, fourteen of which are recognized as the “Official Directory.” The family-owned company prides itself on anticipating the information and practice needs of the legal marketplace faster, and more comprehensively, than any other information provider. But keeping up with the chemicals, inks, solutions, and plates of the offset process was becoming increasingly burdensome.

“We publish twenty-one state legal directories, along with numerous Bar Association and other types of legal directories. Our product is information – essential, accurate, and timely information,” explained Richard Klein, Manager at Legal Directories Publishing. “In order to keep up with our expanding product portfolio, we needed to simplify and streamline our manufacturing process. Océ put together a digital printing system for us that does just that.”

High-volume book printers like Legal Directories Publishing are choosing the Océ VarioPrint 6320 Ultra system because it is the most productive perfecting digital system in its class, according to Francis McMahon, Vice President, Marketing, Production Printing Systems division of Océ North America. “The Océ VarioPrint 6320 Ultra system is a great fit for Legal Directories,” he said. “Books printed 4-up on a 12x18" sheet are produced 61% faster on the Océ VarioPrint 6320 system than on leading competitive devices.”

Legal Directories acquired the Océ VarioPrint 6320 Ultra system with the aim of entirely eliminating offset, and that goal has already been achieved. “This is our first foray into digital printing, and we are now using it for absolutely everything,” said Klein. “In fact, we took the offset press out of commission two months after we installed the Océ VarioPrint system.”

Océ PRISMAprepare makeready software was a key factor in the successful transition from offset to digital printing at Legal Directories. Tasks like imposition, creating single- or double-sided full-bleed tabs, merging and programming jobs, and repeating pages are easier than ever before. In addition, many repeat makeready tasks are automated with Océ PRISMAprepare, reducing production time and simplifying the process. “Our entire workflow has been streamlined and is faster – much faster – than it used to be,” said Klein. “It’s been great. We’ve cut out lots of steps, and getting from PDF pages to finished product has never been easier.”
