At the beginning of 2013 the Glory Innovations group in Taipei on the island of Taiwan will optimise operation with a medium-format KBA Rapida 106 high-performance press.
Since starting production in 1980, the group has mainly focused on UV printing on plastics and products with special effects. These include prepaid, scratch, swipe and collectable cards, lenticular prints, puzzles, stickers and many other products. Alongside offset, screen, laminating and film-laminating presses, the company also boasts digital printing technology for personalising prepaid cards with alpha-numeric or QR codes. The Glory Innovations group supplies child-safe toys and was an official vendor for the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing and Expo 2010 in Shanghai. Glory produces food packaging for Frito-Lay, a company owned by PepsiCo, for Asia, America and Europe.
By its own account Glory Innovations has been the world’s biggest manufacturer of scratch cards since 2009, with an output of over four billion cards. It employs over 40 product developers and designers and has over 200 patented products. The ISO 9001 accredited company also has the safety of its food packaging checked by international institutes such as SGS, AIB (American Institute of Baking) and Bureau Veritas.
The KBA Rapida 106 was ordered with six printing units, a coater and a double delivery extension. With added extras for carton and foil printing plus UV equipment for the inking units and coater, the 18,000sph, 740 x 1,060mm (29.1 x 41.7in) press is engineered precisely to the printing house’s specifications. The interdeck dryers can be inserted at multiple docking stations in the press, guaranteeing a high level of flexibility and numerous production options. Alongside the VariDry UV interdeck dryers the press also boasts VariDry IR, thermal and UV end-of-press dryers. Automatic plate changers and CleanTronic Multi automatic blanket and impression-cylinder washing units during ink changes also help to enhance productivity. An emission extraction system (EES) eliminates production-related odours at the delivery and safeguards the operator’s health. Image quality is monitored online via KBA ErgoTronic colour density control and by colour measurement and control systems based on Lab values. The press is networked with pre-press via a LogoTronic workstation and CIPLink software.
By deciding on a Rapida 106, Glory Innovations opted for the most advanced sheetfed offset press on the market. The press will join a six-colour double-coater press from another German manufacturer. Alongside enhancements in print quality and product range, the Rapida 106 paves the way for further growth.
