The old adage is that success breeds success. If that’s true, then the Eastern Coatings Show scheduled for May, 2015, will be a mammoth success!! This year’s Show, the first ever ECS at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ, hosted by the Metropolitan New York Coatings Association, the Philadelphia Society for Coatings Technology and the New England Society for Coatings Technology, received almost thunderous acclaim from the over 600 people who attended. “An outstanding Show…” “Most rewarding…” “Why hasn’t this been done before…” were some of the comments overheard.
Forty-two papers were presented over a four day span; fifty-one Exhibitors presented their wares; over 200 attendees added to their knowledge of the Coatings field by attending the presentations, and another 400 came to visit the Exhibits in the Exhibit Hall. Better than 125 attended the Gala Dinner on Wednesday evening; they were rewarded by a stellar presentation by Keynoter Peter Molinaro, Vice President of North America Government Affairs, for The Dow Chemical Company. His topic well analyzed the problems and the opportunities facing the Coatings industry today.
The Gala Dinner was also highlighted with the ECS setting a new industry standard with the Pflaumer Honors for Innovation with awards for the Most Outstanding paper and the Outstanding Paper. The winners were Victor Arriaga (Momentive Specialty Chemicals) for Most Outstanding paper and Donald Lawson (Cardolite Corp.) for Outstanding Paper.
The ECS Committee, whose members labored mightily to bring the Show about, were both surprised and enthused by the unexpected turnout. Rick Mazzariello (Enrichem Specialties, LLC), the Committee Chair and the progenitor of the Show concept, said “The ECS was truly a collaborative effort of the MNYCA, the NESCT and the PSCT. Enthusiasm for this event was very high and hence attendance levels were much greater than expected. We have received positive feedback from many attendees, speakers and exhibitors and we are planning our next Show in 2015 to be even bigger and better.”
His Committee members, Sheila Belding (Troy Corp.) Loyd Burcham (Stonhard); Dan Canavan III ( D.B. Becker Co., Inc.; President, Philadelphia Society for Coatings Technology); Shaun Julian ( E.W. Kaufmann Co.); Bill Nichols (D. B. Becker Co., Inc.; New England Society for Coatings Technology); Dale Pritchett (Rodman Publishing); Chuck Shearer (DSM); Dave White (Heucotech, Ltd.; MNYCA President); and Bob Whiteley (JNS-SmithChem, LLC) were all in accord. Dave White chaired the sub-committee that called for, received and selected the papers that were presented. He commented that the Presenters were pleased with the interaction of the audience with the many questions that followed each presentation.
