New Leaf Paper announced the launch of a new Online Eco Audit Calculator that enables customers to easily calculate and communicate the environmental benefits of using post-consumer waste versus virgin fiber, with the world. This represents a significant milestone for the company and for its customers.
Measured in million BTUs of energy (British Thermal Unit, a traditional unit of energy), pounds of solid waste, and pounds of greenhouse gases, the resources saved not only allows customers to illustrate their environmental stewardship, but to put their environmental savings into numbers. While New Leaf Paper has over 8 million Eco Audits in circulation, this is the first time that customers have the online tools for their own use.
?Today, an estimated 85% of the world?s global paper use is made using virgin fiber,? said Jeff Mendelsohn, CEO of New Leaf Paper. ?The deforestation caused by harvesting virgin fiber is devastating to the world?s natural resources, and results in wasted paper clogging up landfills. For example, on average, plain paper accounts for 40% landfill volume.?
Mendelsohn continued, ?With our new Online Eco Audit Calculator, we are enabling our customers to communicate their environmental savings to their clients and prove they are making better choices. The Eco Audit not only puts hard numbers to environmental savings, but our customers can also download print ready artwork to include in their materials. This allows them to share their resource savings with their clients, and with the world.?
The Eco Audit Calculator delivers three core benefits:1. Quantifiable savings by New Leaf Paper grade. The online Eco Audit calculator is easy to use and only requires customers to input the paper grade and weight (or the size and number of sheets) ordered, and the calculator analyzes the environment benefits of the specific New Leaf Paper choice. The result is then presented in a compelling and graphical audit form.
2. Eco Audit art generated on-demand enables user-generated low and high-resolution Eco in six different formats. A single page PDF (please let me know if you would like an example) is generated featuring six Eco Audit formats customers can choose from. As part of this PDF, links are provided to download any of these six formats individually, for inclusion in any presentation format (Word, PowerPoint, Illustrator, etc). Eco Audits can then be printed in books, publications, and marketing collateral.
3. Savings validated by the Environmental Defense Fund & Paper Task Force. These groups studied the environmental impacts of virgin versus post-consumer recycled paper and validated environmental savings by paper grade. Members of the Task Force included senior executives from the Environmental Defense Fund, Duke University, Johnson & Johnson, McDonald¹s, Prudential Insurance, and Time Inc.
Each New Leaf Paper Eco Audit is specific and particular to the paper used for a particular print run. For example, when the fifth book in the Harry Potter series, Order of the Phoenix, was released in Canada, it included a New Leaf Paper Eco Audit. That statement indicated that the print run of 950,000 copies resulted in the savings of 29,600 trees, 12.4 million gallons of water, 20,300 BTUs of energy, 1.4 million pounds of solid waste, and 2.7 million pounds of greenhouse gases.
Other environmental calculators are available on the web but are generic, not grade specific, whereas the New Leaf Paper Eco Audit captures the credentials of the paper selected. Eco Audits can include the Ancient Forest Friendly logo, wind power logo, and/or Green-e logo (manufactured with electricity offset with Green-e® certified renewable energy certificates), as appropriate.
