Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced the FlatSpread FS-500, the new film hinge processor, for its Canon DreamLabo 5000 Inkjet Production Photo Printer. This new post-press machine will create a "FlatSpread" lay-flat style photo book and will be on display at WPPI Expo in Las Vegas, March 11 - 13, in the Canon booth (# 421).

Making its US debut at GRAPH EXPO is Duplo's (Booth 2221) FKS PrintBind KB-4000 PUR Perfect Binder. The single-clamp KB-4000 combines heavy-duty milling and notching with the strong adhesiveness of both PUR and EVA hot melt side glues to produce high quality, perfect bound books up to 200 books per hour. Books are first applied with PUR along the spine then side-glued with the fast-drying EVA, enabling users to handle the book immediately. The KB-4000 also features a closed-tank system to prevent the emission of fumes. Other solutions on display will be the DB-280 and DPB-500 Perfect Binders.

Gateway Bookbinding Systems (Booth 1061), the makers of PLASTIKOIL plastic spiral binding, will introduce another machine at GRAPH EXPO with their PBS 2300 Roller Inserter/Single-sided crimper. The Rilecart WB-360 from Spiel Associates (Booth 2651) is an economical, entry level double loop wire binder. It will bind books at speeds up to 800 books per hour. The machine will insert any double loop wire diameter between ¼" and 1¼". Set up is controlled by a touch screen computer. The WB-360 automatically cuts the double loop wire to the proper length and delivers it to the inserting station. The operator hangs the book and steps on a foot pedal. The book is then moved automatically to the closing station where the wire is crimped. The book then falls onto the hopper. The WB-360 will bind books from 2.75" to 14" on the spine length. No tools are required.

Spiral James Burn (Spiral Binding Company, Inc.) will be featuring the following document finishing solutions in Booth 2216 at GRAPH EXPO 2012: the new Foliant line of single-sided laminating solutions, the new PDI Rhin-O-Tuff Onyx series of heavy duty table-top punching and binding machines, and the complete line of James Burn International (JBI) punching and binding solutions. Earlier this year, Spiral became the North American Master Distributor for Foliant—the “World’s #1 Brand of Single-Sided Laminators”—also known in the industry as the “Yellow” laminators. Now, with both the James Burn Lhermite and Foliant lines, Spiral is able to offer a complete solution for the automatic punching, binding, and laminating needs of in-plant and on-demand print shops.

Standard Finishing Systems (Booth 617) will present a broad range of intelligently automated post press, paper handling and inserting solutions at GRAPH EXPO, including several North American premiers. Standard has organized a live demonstration of a complete bookbinding workflow that begins with pre-printed digital rolls up to 30-inch wide. In a North American premier, the new Standard Hunkeler PF7 Plow-fold Module is designed to convert digitally-imaged webs up to 30-inch-wide into book blocks that are then bound on the Standard Horizon BQ-470 Perfect Binder in-line with the HT-80 Three-knife Trimmer. The PF7 applies one or two folds in the web direction as needed before the CS6 cutter/stacker converts the multiple-up imposition into cleanly offset-stacked and signatured book blocks, which are then conveyed to the operator input station of the binder for “near-line” efficiency. The BQ-470 can produce up to 1,350 books per hour, bind books up to 2.5 inches thick, and meet varying customer application requirements with interchangeable glue tanks that support both hot-melt EVA and PUR adhesives. The HT-80 allows for trimming of variable thickness books, one after another, for true on demand book production, and is designed for operation in-line with the BQ-470 or for off-line use.

Spiel Associates' RILECART B-599 is a fully automatic double loop wire binder capable of binding books at the blinding speed of 4,000 per hour. The operator drops a book on the conveyor and the B-599 does the rest. It can insert the wire, crimps the wire, and delivers the book onto a conveyor. The machine will bind books from 3.5x4 inches up to 17.5x19.5 inches. Books thickness can range from .25 of an inch to one inch. Skip binding up to five parts is attainable. An in-line punching section is optional. A calendar machine is also available.

Live demonstrations of complete system solutions have been organized to simulate real-world production environments, including a bookbinding workflow that begins with pre-printed digital rolls. A Standard Hunkeler UW6 unwinds a 20-inch-wide roll which is sheeted in the Standard Hunkeler CS6 rotary cutter and signature folded in the Standard Horizon AF-566F Digital folder. Individual signatures are then accumulated and pressed into book blocks in the intelligent PSX-56 stacker, before being conveyed to the operator input station of the new BQ-270V perfect binder. The Standard Horizon BQ-270V—which is being shown for the first time—is equipped with a sensor-activated book block digital caliper system that delivers ultra-fast book-of-one capability. Based on the established BQ-270 technology platform, new BQ-270V features include rapid automated set-up with effectively zero makeready time between different book thicknesses. Bound books are then trimmed in the new HT-30C three-side trimmer, which now has color touchscreen control and an optional barcode-driven system that can automatically vary finished trim size from book to book for on demand production.

The Vantage 720 folder/gluer system, an in-line folding box gluer designed and engineered by B&R Moll, Inc. (Booth 4033), now has a production capacity of more than 25,000 boxes per hour, which represents a substantial increase over the previous model. The Vantage 720 system is ideally suited for producing straight-line boxes, table tents, sleeves, CD wallets, computer software cartons, and presentation folders. An optional kit for producing auto-lock bottom boxes is available with this system.
