The world’s first automatic plate changing systems for a single-width offset newspaper press allows all the plates—or any combination of plates—on the new Goss Magnum Compact press to be changed automatically in less than 30 seconds. This technology makes the press competitive and cost effective for producing newspaper, book and semi-commercial products at ultra-short run lengths of as low as 500 copies as well as at more conventional web offset run lengths.
Each printing couple of the Magnum Compact press has its own dedicated cassette which holds both new and expired plates. While the press is running, an operator can insert new plates for the next job into the cassettes. When the press stops, the operator initiates the plate changing sequence with the push of a button. Expired plates are rotated off the cylinders, and plates for following job are rotated onto the cylinders without manual intervention. The expired plates are not damaged during the unload process and can be reused, an important advantage for repeat jobs.
Goss will have a specially designed section of a Magnum Compact printing unit, including plate and blanket cylinders and the Autoplate system, operating in Booth 2312 to demonstrate this technology.
