The Variable Booklet Production system by MBO America (Booth 849) is an offline solution comprised of an unwinder, the industry-unique sheeter with variable cutting and folder with selective folding technology, and a delivery system. Variable cutting allows different signatures to be printed on the same roll, while selective folding identifies the length of a sheet in order to fold it correctly. The selective folding feature is key because it identifies and redirects sheets to appropriate fold paths, on-the-fly. As an example, because a 16-pg. signature would have a different fold path than a 24-pg. signature, the technology opens and closes a fold plate, accordingly, to create the correct path for the incoming signature.
Prior to the introduction of MBO’s “Selective Folding Technology,” job applications were limited to one predetermined folding configuration, making changes in layouts and folding configurations, within the same finishing run, impossible. Now that the MBO cutting unit and folding units are able to change length and folding configurations on-the-fly, variable layouts and page counts are easily managed within the same web run, and produce a variety of configurations to match the requirements of the end product.
Another major advantage of the Variable Booklet Production system by MBO America is its modularity. If a customer wants to expand into a new job application, he or she need only implement the new module, making the MBO solution easy to scale and adapt for future operations.
