EFI's (Booth 1902) Fiery image smoothing technology addresses the issue of “stepping” or “banding” in printed vector gradients, where the shades do not transition smoothly through a gradient blend. This technology was unveiled in its latest form in the Xerox EX/EX-P 2100 Print Servers Powered by Fiery, which drive the new Xerox Versant 2100 Press.
EFI implemented a 10-bit image smoothing capability for the Versant 2100 Press, branded Fiery Ultra Smooth Gradients, allowing the Fiery server to leverage the 10-bit capability of the Versant 2100 Press. The result is a proprietary image-smoothing technology that delivers thousands of addressable shades in a vector gradient per color.
Compared to the 256 addressable shades in 8-bit engines and servers, Fiery Ultra Smooth Gradients delivers smoother transitions, eliminating the potentially undesirable stepping or banding effect. This ensures the highest quality print appearance, rivaling traditional offset smoothness.
