The Tecnau Zero Speed Splicer u40 from Lasermax Roll Systems (Booth 220) automatically changes input rolls for high-speed digital printers, eliminating printer down-time due to depleted rolls. The Splicer u40 consists of two roll unwinders, two 90° web guides to assure precision at the splicing edge, a central splicing unit and a buffer. Rolls up to 52” diameter and 20.5” width are loaded easily into each unwinder directly from an optional, conventional roll cart. The trailing edge of the running roll is automatically spliced to the leading edge of the second roll. With the help of its buffer module, the Splicer u40 is able to maintain the maximum printer speed (up to 500 fpm) uninterruptedly while the splice is made and the new roll is accelerated to the process speed.
The Splicer u40 permits mixing of paper quality, paper grade and web width between rolls, supporting real book-on-demand production when paired with an-line binding solution.
With automatic compression of splices and integration exercises with our printer partners, Tecnau ensures that the Splicer u40 is compatible with varying high-speed production digital inkjet printers.
The Splicer u40 is available in two versions:
- Semi-automated version (shown at Graph Expo): While one roll is running, the operator readies the second roll for splicing, preparing the lead edge of the web with splice tape – this is a simple procedure taking about one minute.
- Fully-automated version: While one roll is running, the second web is automatically advanced and prepared with splice tape with no operator intervention.
