To accompany its Titian ‘Metamorphosis’ exhibition, the National Gallery in London commissioned a beautifully illustrated book of poems inspired by the paintings. The book sold out its initial run of 2,400 copies almost immediately. The museum needed to quickly produce more copies, but the original lithographic printer gave a six-week turnaround time, which meant the books wouldn’t arrive until after the exhibit closed.
By shifting to HP Indigo digital printing, the museum was able to have finished books produced that were indistinguishable from the originals and available for sale within a week with a lower unit cost than for offset production of this short-run.
